Trump, Macron Meet Amid UN General Assembly
US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron met on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Their discussion focused on differing perspectives regarding Gaza and Palestinian statehood.
Trump Rejects Two-State Solution
According to CNN, Trump dismissed the two-state solution, arguing that it would effectively “reward” Hamas for its actions. The US president insisted that recognising a Palestinian state now would honour Hamas, especially in light of the attacks on October 7, 2023.
France Stands With Other Nations
Recently, France joined the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal in officially recognising the Palestinian state. Despite this, Trump maintained his opposition during the bilateral talks.
Trump Praises Macron’s Diplomacy
At the meeting, Trump commended Macron for his diplomatic efforts, stating that the French leader had helped him prevent global conflicts. “Emmanuel has actually helped me with a couple of the wars,” Trump said, referencing Macron’s earlier comment that a Nobel Peace Prize for Trump would require ending the war in Gaza.
October 7 Attacks a Key Factor
When questioned about Palestinian statehood, Trump reiterated that recognising Palestine now would honour Hamas, pointing to the October 7 attacks as “one of the most savage days in the history of the world.” He stressed the need to prioritise the return of hostages over immediate state recognition.
Macron Clarifies France’s Position
Seated beside Trump, Macron highlighted that acknowledging a Palestinian state does not equate to ignoring the October 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas.

The ongoing Gaza conflict began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on Israel. Israel has since retaliated with a military offensive in the Gaza Strip, escalating tensions and violence in the region.
