Two Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have lost their lives in a swimming pool incident that occurred after celebrations marking their matriculation ceremony.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the development through its spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh.
The deceased were identified as Oludere Opeyemi, 22, and Adegbola Blessing, 19.
They reportedly died at a hotel in Akungba-Akoko during a party organised in honour of newly admitted students.
According to the police spokesperson, the incident was reported on January 29, 2026.
He stated that the first victim was found unconscious in the hotel’s swimming pool in the evening.
“He was rescued by the pool manager and given first aid before he regained consciousness and was able to stand. He was later taken home by his friends,” he said.
A short while later, the second victim was discovered in the same swimming pool.
“He was promptly rescued and rushed to the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” he added.
Jimoh disclosed that officers from the Akungba Divisional Police Station were immediately sent to the scene to begin investigations into the incident.
He also noted that, as part of preliminary findings, the hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, and the pool manager were invited for questioning.
The police spokesperson further explained that the situation deteriorated in the early hours of January 30, 2026, when Blessing, who had earlier been revived, was reported dead.
He added that the matter has been handed over to the command’s monitoring unit for a discreet and thorough investigation.
The PRO said the remains of the students have been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital in Ikare-Akoko for preservation and autopsy.
