President Bola Tinubu has arrived back in Abuja following his participation in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government-level Meeting held in Rome, Italy.
The President’s return was announced in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Tinubu’s trip to Rome underscored Nigeria’s renewed dedication to advancing regional and global security partnerships.
At the gathering, world leaders met to deepen cooperation in combating terrorism and violent extremism.
Tinubu had left Nigeria on October 12 to attend the meeting, which officially commenced on October 14. “President Bola Tinubu returns to Abuja today after participating in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government-level Meeting in Rome, Italy,” the statement read.
The release further noted that the Rome session centred on strengthening both regional and international alliances in tackling terrorism and violent extremism, with a particular focus on West Africa.
The high-level engagement took place on Wednesday, October 15, at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. It drew a host of global leaders, including King Abdullah II of Jordan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Presidents of Nigeria, Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
Other distinguished participants included Azouz Nasri, President of Algeria’s Upper House, as well as representatives from Côte d’Ivoire, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Senegal, and Uzbekistan, in addition to special envoys and security experts.
According to the statement, Tinubu’s involvement in the Rome meeting aligns with his administration’s ongoing security diplomacy efforts and reflects Nigeria’s active engagement in international peacebuilding and counterterrorism initiatives.
