The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee set up to investigate the recurring crisis in Plateau State has announced that it is prepared to submit its final report to President Bola Tinubu.
The move is aimed at ending decades of violence that have claimed thousands of lives and caused extensive property destruction across the state.
Chairman of the Committee, Wale Ahmed, revealed this on Thursday during a visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja.
He described the submission as the culmination of the committee’s extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
Ahmed said President Tinubu has demonstrated a strong commitment to restoring peace, not only in Plateau State but across Nigeria.
He added that the committee’s report, containing findings and recommendations, would be presented to both the House and the President.
“There will be a forum where all major stakeholders, individuals, community leaders and organisations will present their perspectives.
At the end of our consultations, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the House and to Mr President, who, as Commander-in-Chief, has shown great interest in achieving lasting peace in Plateau State and the entire country,” Ahmed stated.
According to Ahmed, the committee’s engagements have offered valuable insights into both the root causes of the crisis and the possible solutions.
“Every stakeholder we have met has presented unique perspectives. We have written to over 300 individuals and organisations and received numerous memoranda.
Even the immediate past Commander of Operation Safe Haven, General Rogers, appeared before us to share his experience,” he added.
He noted that the committee will carefully review all submissions to extract common themes and actionable recommendations that align with the aspirations of Plateau residents.
In his remarks, Prof. Yilwatda lauded the House for taking decisive steps to address the crisis, noting its devastating impact on the state’s economy and public confidence.
“We have lost countless lives and seen businesses shut down because of insecurity.
Many now see Plateau as unsafe, and this perception has affected tourism, investment, and development.
I commend the National Assembly for showing concern and for working to uncover the root causes of this crisis,” he said.
The committee has already met with former Governor Joshua Dariye, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and security agencies, among others.
Ahmed emphasised that the submissions from these engagements would help ensure that the final report accurately reflects the realities and hopes of the Plateau people.
The House had constituted the panel on March 31, 2024, to investigate the remote and immediate causes of violent attacks in the North-Central state.
The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance jointly moved by Ishaya Lalu and Dalyop Chollom during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
