Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup were dashed on a tense night in Rabat, where DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Frank Onyeka provided a dream start for Nigeria with a stunning third-minute opener, but Meschak Elia silenced the cheers when he struck an equaliser in the 32nd minute.

The clash remained locked at 1-1 after extra time, despite flurries of late chances, particularly from Nigeria, who desperately pushed for a winner.

The penalty shootout, however, turned into a nightmare for the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey missed the first attempt, Semi Ajayi had his effort saved, and Moses Simon also failed to hit the target.

DR Congo, calm under pressure, converted the crucial kicks to seal their place in the intercontinental playoff and crush Nigeria’s World Cup dreams.

The night was made even tougher as Nigeria struggled to find rhythm after Victor Osimhen was forced off early in the second half.

While players like Arokodare and Onyemaechi tried to lift the team, they couldn’t break through the disciplined Congolese defence.
