The newly appointed Service Chiefs on Wednesday appeared before the Senate for screening at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
They arrived around 10 a.m., accompanied by top military officers, as lawmakers moved to fast-track their confirmation, according to Channels Television.
The Senate had earlier planned to conduct the exercise next week but shifted it to Wednesday, October 29, following an announcement by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio read a letter from President Bola Tinubu requesting the confirmation of General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff.
He explained that the Senate decided to reschedule the screening so that the new military heads could assume their roles without delay.
In his correspondence, President Tinubu urged the Senate to speed up the confirmation process to ensure effective coordination and stability within the nation’s security architecture.
Last Friday, Tinubu approved sweeping changes in the military hierarchy, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff to replace General Christopher Musa.
Others appointed include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.
Major-General E. A. P. Undiendeye retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence, according to a statement issued by Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication.
All appointments, according to the Presidency, take immediate effect.
General Oluyede, who became Chief of Army Staff last year following the death of General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, now steps up to replace General Musa as Defence Chief.
The outgoing service chiefs—Musa, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and Air Marshal Bala Abubakar—had been in office since June 2023 and led several major operations against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed bandits across the North East and North West regions.
