Fenerbahce manager, José Mourinho, has been handed a three-match touchline ban following a controversial altercation with Galatasaray coach, Okan Buruk, during the Turkish Super Cup. The incident, which took place after Fenerbahce’s loss to their fierce rivals, saw Mourinho walk up behind Buruk and pinch his nose an action that sent the Galatasaray boss tumbling to the ground.
According to reports by Goal, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) considered a much sterner penalty, potentially ranging from five to ten matches. However, the disciplinary committee ultimately settled on a reduced three-game ban after it was established that Mourinho had been provoked by Buruk at full-time.
This marks Mourinho’s second disciplinary action in 2025. In February, the Portuguese manager was slapped with a four-match ban after making racist remarks directed at members of the Galatasaray bench — a controversy that sparked significant backlash.
The latest incident has stirred more tension in the Turkish football scene, with Galatasaray officials calling for harsher sanctions. The club’s vice-president has openly criticized Mourinho, questioning his respect for Turkish football and demanding stronger punishment. Meanwhile, Buruk, in a post-match interview, expressed disappointment over the confrontation, stating, “It wasn’t nice.”
Fenerbahce, on the other hand, has come to Mourinho’s defense, claiming that the manager was unfairly targeted and emotionally triggered by Buruk’s alleged post-match taunting. The rivalry between the two Istanbul giants has intensified following the incident, drawing both local and international attention.
Mourinho, known for his fiery personality and touchline drama, now faces a crucial period away from the dugout as Fenerbahce continues its league campaign. His absence could pose a tactical challenge for the team as they fight to maintain their position in the Turkish Super Lig.
