Cheque, born Akinbi Bamidele Brett on March 23, 1995, hails from Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria. He rose to fame as a Nigerian rapper and singer, gaining widespread recognition with his 2020 single “Zoom.”
Cheque’s music journey began during his undergraduate days at Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, where he studied Chemical Engineering and graduated in 2016. Initially performing under the stage name Kyle B, his early genre was Gospel hip hop. Notably, he attended the same university as fellow artists Blaqbonez and others.
During his time as Kyle B, Cheque participated in the Hennessy Cypher (Part VI) alongside Dark Poet, Kursor, Blaqbonez, Toosleek, and Eclipse. He also released an extended play (EP) titled Super Adventure Crew, which garnered popularity on campus.
In February 2019, Phyno discovered Cheque and offered him a recording deal with Penthauze Music. This marked the beginning of Cheque’s professional music career. His introductory song, “Nyem Space,” was released in March 2019, featuring a collaboration with another Penthauze artist.
Cheque’s unique music style blends afrobeat with rap, trap, RnB, and other genres. He gained widespread recognition with the release of his EP, Razor, in July 2020, which included the hit track “Zoom.” A subsequent remix of “Zoom” featured Davido and Wale.
In September 2021, Cheque collaborated with Olamide on the single “LOML” (Love Of My Life) and released his debut studio album, Bravo, on September 24, 2021.
Cheque has received notable awards, including the Best Duo African HipHop award at the All Africa Music Awards in 2021, alongside Fireboy DML.
In 2024, Cheque featured Phyno in his song “Glory Days”.
And with that latest collaboration, Cheque continues to make waves in the music industry.
