Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally enlisted as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in the alignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
The registration was completed on Monday, days after Atiku informed ADC supporters and political stakeholders in the state of his intention to join the party.
An aide to the former vice president, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development in a statement circulated to journalists on Monday.
Images and video clips from the exercise captured Atiku’s convoy entering the town to loud celebrations, with supporters drumming, dancing, and displaying placards bearing his portrait. He was seen acknowledging the crowd as he received his ADC membership card.
Shortly after completing the process, Atiku posted a brief update on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “It’s official. -AA”.
His registration cements his relationship with the coalition party, which he openly endorsed in July as a rallying platform for major opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, in their bid to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 polls.
Until now, Atiku and several other leading opposition figures had not formally signed up as members.
With his entry into the ADC, political analysts believe the party’s influence may widen as opposition blocs attempt to build a united front ahead of the next general election.
