Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel returned to US screens on Tuesday with a powerful defence of free speech, amid the controversy over his brief suspension. Kimmel’s remarks come as the United States grapples with questions over government influence on media, a topic that has drawn both conservative and liberal ire.
Defending Free Speech
In a lengthy opening monologue, an emotional Kimmel praised the public outrage over his suspension. “A government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn’t like is anti-American. Our government cannot be allowed to control what we do and do not say on television,” he declared to wild applause.
Kimmel, known for his frequent criticism of Donald Trump and his inner circle, had drawn conservative criticism after claiming “the MAGA gang” was exploiting the college campus murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. On Tuesday, he offered an apology. “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what was obviously a deeply disturbed individual,” he said, his voice cracking.
Trump Reacts
Kimmel’s suspension had sparked delight for Trump, who has long resented the ridicule he faces from late-night comedians. Hours before Kimmel’s return, Trump took to social media to complain and threaten ABC, writing, “Why would they want someone back who does so poorly, who’s not funny, and who puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE? I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative.”
It was not immediately clear what legal grounds Trump might think he has. Previous suits against media firms — including the one against ABC — were largely viewed as meritless, but settled seemingly as a way to appease the often-vengeful president.
Audience Reaction
Fans at the Hollywood taping praised Kimmel’s return. Dana Lotkowski, 62, said, “It was great. He was humble, funny, and just very genuine. His delivery was on point, heartfelt… And it was very genuine.” Katie Persico, 34, added, “I felt like I was part of history a little bit for free speech.”
Affiliate Boycott
The clash began when FCC Chairman Brendan Carr appeared to threaten the licenses of ABC affiliates airing the show unless Kimmel was removed. Nexstar and Sinclair, which own dozens of affiliates, announced the show would be pulled from their schedules, prompting Disney to suspend it nationwide. Sinclair demanded an apology to Kirk’s family and a donation to Turning Point USA. Even after resumption, some affiliates, including in Washington DC, New Orleans, Nashville, and Seattle, continued the boycott.
Backlash and Disney’s Response
Kimmel’s suspension drew sharp criticism from liberal circles, with many arguing he had been targeted for being critical of Trump. Some conservatives, including Senator Ted Cruz and broadcaster Tucker Carlson, also expressed concern. Disney faced backlash for what many viewed as a spineless response to government pressure. By Monday, the company said the suspension aimed to “avoid further inflaming a tense situation” but confirmed the show would return after discussions with Kimmel.
