In 2025, Nigeria witnessed a major political shift as three sitting governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defections have raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about party loyalty, development priorities, and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Below is a detailed look at each governor, their reasons for switching parties, and the implications for the political landscape:
1. Governor Umo Eno – Akwa Ibom State
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State was the first among the three to announce his defection to the APC in early 2025.
His move came amid ongoing internal crises within the PDP that he believed hindered his ability to effectively deliver on his development agenda.
Political analysts note that Eno’s decision reflects a growing trend of governors seeking alignment with the federal government to accelerate projects and secure development funding.
By joining the APC, Eno aims to contribute to the party’s national development vision while ensuring Akwa Ibom remains on track with infrastructure and social programmes.
2. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori – Delta State
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, also moved to the APC this year.
The decision was reportedly influenced by disputes and factionalism within the PDP. In joining the APC, Oborevwori expressed confidence in the party’s capacity to foster unity and accelerate development in Delta State.
Political commentators argue that this defection strengthens the APC in the South-South region and highlights the party’s growing appeal among leaders seeking stronger ties with the federal government.
It also demonstrates a willingness among some governors to prioritise developmental goals over longstanding party loyalty.
3. Governor Peter Mbah – Enugu State
The latest defection was that of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who formally joined the APC in October 2025.
In his address, Mbah stated, “The decision was made after careful reflection and is aimed at aligning Enugu’s development with the broader national vision.”
He also expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu for their support, which he said had enabled significant developmental strides in the state.
Mbah emphasised that fair representation and partnership at the federal level were critical in his decision, noting that the APC offered a platform aligned with the aspirations of Enugu residents.
