The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, calling on the international community to exercise restraint and uphold the principles of international law.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, ECOWAS said it had been closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and stressed the need for respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“ECOWAS has followed with concern recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” the regional bloc said, noting that while states have the right to combat international crimes, such actions must remain within the bounds of international law.
The organisation acknowledged “the right of states to fight international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking,” but cautioned that such efforts must not undermine the sovereignty of other nations.
ECOWAS reminded the international community of “their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law, especially Article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter.”
Aligning its position with that of the African Union, ECOWAS said it “fully aligns itself with the statement the African Union issued on 3 January 2026, that calls for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela.”
Reaffirming its support for the Venezuelan people, the bloc said it stood in solidarity with them at a critical moment in their national journey. “ECOWAS reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all states to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Venezuela,” the statement said.
It further expressed confidence in the ability of Venezuelans to determine their own future, adding that the community “expresses support to the people as they shape the future of their country through an inclusive process.”
The statement underscores ECOWAS’ broader commitment to peaceful dialogue, respect for international norms and the right of peoples to self-determination.
