Selecting a top engineering program in Nigeria goes beyond prestige. It requires confirming that the university holds COREN accreditation, offers modern facilities, has qualified faculty, provides diverse specializations, and maintains strong industry connections.
Based on COREN’s latest listings, these 15 universities stand out for their engineering programs:
- Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State
Known for breadth in engineering disciplines (Agricultural, Civil & Environmental, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical, Mining, Computer, etc.), FUTA’s programs are fully accredited. It also has strong research output and technical workshops.
- Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Niger State
FUTMINNA offers many engineering programs like Mechatronics, Computer, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical, etc., all with full COREN accreditation. Regular re-accreditation ensures standards are maintained.
- Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), Kaduna State
One of the oldest universities, ABU has well-established engineering departments including Polymer & Textile Engineering among others. Their accreditation status is current.
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State
OAU is consistently well-ranked for engineering, with strong departments in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, Civil, Computer, and Agricultural Engineering. Its facilities and faculty reputation are high.

- University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State

- Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State

- Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State
FUTO has a strong technical and engineering tradition, with multiple engineering departments fully accredited. It is also known for its engineering research output.
- Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State

- Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa State
NDU’s engineering offerings, especially in Petroleum, Civil, and Agricultural/Environmental Engineering, are fully accredited. Its coastal location gives relevance to engineering work related to marine, environmental, and oil/gas industries.
- Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Calabar, Cross River State

- Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State
