Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that he will remain active in politics for life but may leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if the party fails to realign with the progressive values he stands for.
El-Rufai made this known in an interview with Arise Television on Monday.
He explained that while he has no plans to seek elective office again, he intends to continue influencing governance and political decisions within his party.
He said, “I will remain in politics for life, but that does not mean I will be contesting elections or something. I will remain in politics because I believe that I have to influence what happens in our party so that we have better-quality candidates and governors. That’s all. I’m 65; I’m not yet ready to retire from politics. I intend to remain in politics.”
However, he hinted at the possibility of leaving the APC if the party does not uphold its founding principles.
“Sooner or later, if APC doesn’t sort itself out and come back to those progressive values that I stand for and why I’m standing, I will find another platform that has similar values,” he stated.
El-Rufai also reflected on his political journey, revealing that he never had ambitions to run for office and was initially reluctant to contest the Kaduna governorship election in 2015.
“I didn’t want to be governor. President Buhari—you can ask him anytime—more or less forced me to run for governor of Kaduna State. I was afraid of running because I had never run for office.”
