South Korean Court jails Former President for Obstructing Arrest

South Korean court on Friday sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to five years in prison over charges linked to his failed attempt to impose martial law.

The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of obstructing authorities from carrying out an arrest warrant issued in connection with his declaration of martial law in December 2024.

The ruling was delivered during a live broadcast of the proceedings.

The court also convicted the former president of fabricating official documents and failing to follow the legal procedures required for the declaration of martial law.

Friday’s judgment marks the first ruling connected to the criminal cases arising from Yoon’s aborted martial law move, which sparked widespread political tension in the country.Yoon retains the right to appeal the sentence.
