President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Army to grant a special promotion to his aide-de-camp (ADC), Nurudeen Yusuf, elevating him from the rank of colonel to brigadier-general.
The directive was conveyed in a confidential communication addressed to the Chief of Army Staff by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, indicating that the president personally approved the promotion.
According to the document, the promotion takes effect from December 12, 2025.
“I wish to convey Mr President’s approval of special presidential promotion of Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf to the rank of brigadier-general and retention as ADC C-in-C with effect from 12 December 2025 for your necessary action as enclosed,” the letter seen by Peoples Gazette read.
The development represents a departure from established military promotion procedures, which traditionally rely on clearly defined criteria such as years of service, completion of mandatory professional courses, and participation in required training programmes.
By authorising a special elevation outside these conventional benchmarks, the move has raised concerns within military circles about adherence to institutional norms.
Sources familiar with army hierarchy warned that the promotion could trigger discontent among officers who have progressed through the ranks strictly via prescribed career pathways.
There are also fears that the decision may fuel resentment within the broader Nigerian Armed Forces, where promotions are typically governed by regimented structures designed to preserve discipline, morale and fairness.
