Paystack, one of Nigeria’s leading fintech startups, has suspended its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, following allegations of sexual misconduct at the workplace.
According to a report by TechCabal, the allegations gained traction on social media on November 12, prompting the company to open a formal investigation.
The controversy centres on tweets Olubi shared between 2009 and 2013, prior to co-founding Paystack. These posts reportedly contained sexually explicit jokes about colleagues, including comments about experiencing erections during meetings. Some tweets also referenced wanting to photograph a coworker’s thighs, as well as material involving minors, bestiality, and sexualised anime characters.
While Olubi has since deleted his X account, social media users have been sharing screenshots of the posts, reigniting debate about workplace ethics and accountability in the Nigerian tech ecosystem.
“Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our Co-founder, Ezra Olubi,” the company told TechCabal.
“We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation. Out of respect for the individuals involved and to protect the integrity of the process, we will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete.”
The company also emphasised that it has put in place a “fair, transparent, and structured” process to ensure the investigation is thorough and aligns with its internal policies.
“This process is guided by our policies, our values, and our commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all employees,” Paystack added.
