China has called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty in the wake of recent threats of military intervention from the United States.
Reaffirming its strong ties with Nigeria, the Chinese government expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, lauding his administration for steering the country on a development course suited to its unique national realities.
The statement was made public through the official website of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the ministry’s spokesperson, Mao Ning, addressed journalists during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Beijing.
“As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats,” she said.
Her remarks came shortly after reports surfaced that the US had issued a warning to Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians, suggesting the possibility of military intervention.
