The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially attained a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives following the defection of six opposition lawmakers during Thursday’s plenary session.
Among the defectors were five members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the South East and one lawmaker from the Labour Party (LP) representing Plateau State.
Those who crossed over to the ruling party include Daniel Asama Ado (Plateau), Chidi Mark Obetta (Enugu), Phillips Anayo Owuegbu (Enugu), Nnaji Nnolim (Enugu), Denis Agbo (Enugu), and Matthew Nwogu (Imo).
With their defection, the APC now commands 242 seats in the Green Chamber, while the PDP’s strength has dropped to 74 members.
In separate letters read during plenary by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the lawmakers cited persistent leadership crises within their former parties as the reason for their decision to join the APC.
The event marking their defection was attended by key political figures, including APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, and former Minister of Defence, Fedelia Njeze, among others.
