The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, has assured Nigerians that deliberate measures are underway to restore full functionality at the nation’s three major refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna.
Ojulari, through a post on X on Wednesday, emphasized that the NNPC is committed to repositioning the refineries for optimal performance and long-term sustainability via a detailed technical and commercial review.
“We are filled with determination! We are looking ahead with optimism to ensure our refineries operate effectively,” Ojulari said. “We are dedicating significant time to a detailed review and are eager to implement our insights.”
He added, “What fuels our drive is the understanding that the prosperity of the Nigerian states and the future success of Nigeria will always take precedence over any individual interests. This very commitment inspires us as we anticipate creating sustainable solutions for our refineries in the near future.”
The GCEO revealed that NNPC is currently conducting a comprehensive technical and commercial review of the three refineries. This phase is focused on assessing each facility to determine the best approach for upgrading or repurposing them to meet modern operational standards.
Ojulari noted that the subsequent stage of the project will involve forging “advanced technical partnerships” with select equity partners who have a proven record in managing refineries according to international benchmarks.
Beyond rehabilitation, the NNPC chief highlighted that the refinery project is being integrated into the broader “National Energy Strategy,” with particular emphasis on energy security and asset optimization.
According to him, the strategy is designed to enable NNPC to maintain capacity as the supplier of last resort for petroleum products under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), while ensuring that refinery operations remain efficient, profitable, and sustainable.
Reaffirming the company’s long-term vision, Ojulari said, “We’re repositioning as a commercially driven, transparent energy company serving Nigerians.”
