The Kano State Hisbah Board has explained the reason behind its decision to cancel the planned wedding between popular Kano-based TikTokers, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira ‘Yar Guda.
According to the Board, the union, which had been referred to it for formalisation, was found to be insincere and merely a scheme by the duo to avoid prosecution for an earlier case of alleged immoral conduct.
The Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the development on Saturday.
“After our investigation, we discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual understanding but rather an attempt to evade legal consequences. The board, therefore, resolved to cancel the wedding to prevent future conflict,” he said.
He added that although both social media personalities had submitted blood samples for medical compatibility tests, the process was halted to prevent further complications. Dr Aminuddeen also stated that the case would be returned to court if the matter remained unresolved.
The controversy began when a Kano Magistrate Court, presided over by Magistrate Halima Wali, temporarily suspended judgment on charges of immoral behaviour filed against the pair by the Kano State Censorship Board, following the release of a viral video.
During court proceedings, both defendants admitted to being in a romantic relationship and expressed their intention to get married.
Consequently, the magistrate granted the Hisbah Board a 60-day window to facilitate the marriage in accordance with Islamic principles and ordered that the matter be brought back to court if the marriage did not take place.
The court’s decision stirred widespread debate, with some critics accusing the judiciary of enforcing a forced marriage.
However, the Kano State Judiciary denied the claim, describing it as a complete misrepresentation of the court’s ruling.
Judiciary spokesperson, Baba Jibo, clarified the court’s position, saying, “Let me restate, for emphasis, that Magistrate Wali never ruled on any forced marriage case. The record of proceedings is available for anyone to verify. What the court did was to suspend its ruling and, for the sake of fairness, refer the two TikTokers to Hisbah to formalise their marriage.”
Jibo further explained that the court’s action was based solely on the confessions made by the defendants.
“For clarity, both TikTokers told the court they love each other. In fact, the lady, Bashira Yar Guda, stated on the record that she would marry Idris only if he provided his own accommodation, not a rented house. It was based on this confession that the court suspended its ruling to allow the marriage process to hold,” Jibo stated.
