Professor Joash Amupitan has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will consider calls for the body to assume responsibility for conducting Local Government elections across the country.

Speaking during his Senate screening on Thursday, Amupitan noted that taking over LG elections could place additional burdens on INEC.

He acknowledged that the idea of INEC overseeing local government polls “has been debated widely. The view of many people is that it should be transferred to INEC because of what is happening in LGs.

“But is it not going to add another burden on INEC if we are to conduct elections in over 700 LGs?

“Because it has been long debated, we will look at it but it is not something I have answers to for now.”

Amupitan, nominated by President Bola Tinubu to serve as INEC chairman, is currently undergoing screening at the Senate.
