In today’s globalised world, the strength of a country’s passport determines how freely its citizens can travel.
The 2025 Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa. African countries have shown notable progress in increasing travel freedom for their citizens.
1. Seychelles – 156 destinations
Seychelles remains Africa’s most powerful passport, offering its citizens access to 156 countries without a visa.
2. Mauritius – 149 destinations
Mauritius follows closely, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 149 countries, reflecting strong international relations.
3. South Africa – 103 destinations
South African passport holders can access 103 destinations, placing the country among the top globally.
4. Botswana – 85 destinations
Botswana provides access to 85 visa-free destinations, highlighting the country’s growing international presence.
5. Namibia – 79 destinations
Namibia’s passport offers entry to 79 destinations, showcasing its expanding diplomatic ties.
6. Lesotho – 76 destinations
Lesotho ranks sixth, allowing citizens to travel to 76 countries without a visa.
7. Eswatini – 74 destinations
Eswatini passport holders enjoy access to 74 destinations, reflecting steady growth in international mobility.
8. Malawi and Morocco – 73 destinations
Both Malawi and Morocco provide access to 73 destinations, indicating strong diplomatic engagement.
9. Kenya and The Gambia – 71 destinations
Kenya and The Gambia share the ninth spot, offering their citizens access to 71 destinations.
