The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has mourned the death of a 200-level student from the Faculty of Dentistry, Ajibola Ibitayo.
Ibitayo, with matriculation number DEN/2021/023, reportedly took his own life after learning that his results from the last semester examinations required him to repeat Part Two for another academic year.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday, noting that the deceased had already repeated Part Two during the previous session.
The student, whose father is a medical doctor, was said to have injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State. In response to the tragedy, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof Adebayo Simeon Bamire, urged parents and guardians to teach their children that temporary setbacks are a normal part of life and not its end. He encouraged students and young people to view failure as an opportunity to redirect their paths towards success and greater achievements.
Bamire prayed for God Almighty to grant the parents, family, Faculty, College of Health Sciences, and the university community the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss.
