A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday granted bail in the sum of N2 billion to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, following his arraignment on an eight-count charge.

Justice Yusuf Halilu, who delivered the ruling, said Emefiele had previously been granted bail in three other pending criminal cases and noted that there was no evidence that he had ever violated bail conditions.

Emefiele is accused of offences including the unlawful acquisition of a 753-unit housing estate, alleged th£ft, and control of billions of naira through proxy accounts.

The judge granted bail on the condition that Emefiele must produce two sureties who each own property worth N2 billion within the FCT—specifically in Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2.

In addition, Emefiele is required to submit his travel documents to the court and perfect the bail conditions by next Wednesday or risk being remanded in custody.

The ruling followed a bail application by Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN). The prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), did not oppose the application but requested the court to impose additional bail conditions different from those earlier granted by other courts.
