Standing in three countries at once sounds almost impossible, but there are places around the world where borders converge at a single point, letting visitors experience three nations in one step.
These unique spots, known as tripoints, combine geography, culture, and history in fascinating ways:
• Dreiländereck (Switzerland, Germany, France)
In the Basel region, this famous tripoint marks where Switzerland, Germany, and France meet.
A monument on the banks of the Rhine celebrates the unity of the three nations, though the exact point lies slightly in the river.
The area is beautifully designed with promenades, cafés, and gardens, and you can easily stroll into neighbouring Weil-am-Rhein in Germany or Saint-Louis in France.
• Drielandenpunt (Netherlands, Belgium, Germany)
Situated near the Dutch town of Vaals, this is one of Europe’s most popular tripoints. A stone marker shows the spot where the three countries converge, surrounded by rolling hills and forest trails.
Visitors enjoy climbing the Wilhelmina Tower for sweeping views of the countryside, while families often explore the nearby hedge maze and picnic spots that make the location even more inviting.
• Treriksrøysa (Norway, Finland, Sweden)
Deep in the Arctic Circle lies this remote yet scenic tripoint.
A concrete cairn, built in 1926, stands as the marker for the three Nordic countries. In summer, visitors can hike the 11-kilometre trail from Kilpisjärvi in Finland, enjoying long daylight hours, while winter brings the magical Northern Lights.
The wild tundra and crystal lakes create an unforgettable northern experience.
• Golden Triangle (Thailand, Laos, Myanmar)
This historic region sits at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers in northern Thailand.
From the viewpoint at Ban Sop Ruak, travellers can gaze across the river into Laos and Myanmar simultaneously.
Once infamous for opium trade routes, the area is now a popular tourist hub featuring river cruises, local markets, and the Hall of Opium museum that documents its complex past.
• Picnic Table Tripoint (Slovakia, Austria, Hungary)
Located near Bratislava, this light-hearted tripoint features a triangular picnic table painted with the flags of the three nations.
Visitors often sit with each limb in a different country while surrounded by the tranquil forests and wetlands of the Danube region.
It’s accessible by car, bicycle, or short hiking trails, making it a charming day-trip destination.
• Triple Frontier (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay)
One of the most striking tripoints in the world, the Triple Frontier lies where the Paraná and Iguazú Rivers meet.
Each nation marks its section with a coloured obelisk visible from the others.
The nearby cities of Puerto Iguazú, Foz do Iguaçu, and Ciudad del Este are connected by bridges, and the famous Iguazú Falls is just a short drive away—offering views from multiple countries.
• Trojmedzie (Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic)
Hidden in the Beskid Mountains, this peaceful tripoint is marked by small bridges and stone markers that symbolise friendship between the three nations.
The area is known for its scenic trails, streams, and meadows, making it a favourite among hikers.
The simplicity and natural charm of the location reflect the quiet beauty of Central Europe.
Tripoints are more than geographical curiosities—they’re powerful reminders of how borders both divide and connect us.
From icy tundra to tropical riversides, these meeting points let travellers explore multiple cultures in a single step and celebrate the diversity of our shared world.
